A message from our Chair

A message from our Chair

For over 15 years, with great success, Capital Angels have been mentoring and investing in companies within the Capital region.

After seeing the impact that a group of people with a common interest can have, a few key investors got together over lunch and Capital Angels was formalised and set up as a Company Limited by Guarantee in 2005.

Over the years Capital Angels has been run by a volunteer board of investors who have invested themselves and encouraged others to invest in companies including the likes of:

  • Mediaware (sold to General Dynamics in 2007)
  • Windlab (listed on the ASX in 2017 and recently sold to a Asset Management firm in 2020)
  • Instaclustr (the company continues to grow globally and has raised well over $20m)

Capital Angels seeks out investment opportunities from across the ACT regions research institutions, the established private sector and emerging entrepreneur community. We see our role not only as facilitating investment, but also educating potential new investors and entrepreneurs about the challenges and opportunities associated with private equity investment.

But of course, investment is not always in the form of funding. It may also be the provision of expertise, introductions and feedback to test an entrepreneur’s assumptions and expectations.

What type of person is a Capital Angel? People may become a Capital Angel for many different reasons, with the most common being to:

  • look for deals to invest in
  • meet with likeminded people to motivate themselves
  • get ideas for their own businesses
  • stay on top of existing Capital Angel investments
  • meet regularly with fellow investors
  • mentor other investors or entrepreneurs
  • sell their services directly to other attendees
  • drum up business for future opportunities
  • consider a start-up themselves

Ideal Capital Angels investors are of course investors who can afford to invest.

Many people have paved the road for us all including, but not limited, to our past chairs: David Malloch, Uwe Boettcher, Nick McNaughton, Michele Troni, Anne-Marie Perrett and most recently, Craig Davis.

We have a terrific history!

Whether you are an investor or a founder/company seeking investment, we encourage you to join our exciting community.

I look forward to meeting you at our next gathering.

Dominic W. Kelly | Chair
